Silo-D

  • Silo-D is a grade 2 listed concrete building located on the Silvertown quays dock site. Grains used to be lifted from ships into the central cube of silos which served great importance for the importation of London. Silos have since been celebrated as a statement of modernism with its unique architectural structure.

  • Through high-quality design, we will improve not only the economic value of the area but improve the relationship of the local community to the site with its regeneration, incorporating physical and social benefits.

  • This design will achieve our vision statement which is " To revitalise the historic Royal Docks by delivering an innovative, sustainable and connected centre for communities and business to thrive".

Design Proposal:

  • The proposal for Silo-D includes the improvement of the interaction and relationship with the water and the public realm. The provision of mixed-use buildings (Objective 1) and green and blue infrastructure will contribute to community cohesion (Objective 4). The vision aims for a strong connection from the historical millennium Mills site and the key access route from the Excel bridge.

  • The layout of connections can be seen on our previous page on the master plan.

  • The silo-D area will be a community area with the surroundings of parks and the nearby water being a safe play zone to increase the relationship of the water with visitors and locals (Objective 6).

  • The design of silo D takes into consideration aspects of different case studies around the world. This includes:

  • Connecting the community

  • Infrastructure

  • Relationship to water

The nearby dock frontage will act as a safe play water zone for children to play in as well as a seating area to have a sensorial experience and therefore relationship with the water thus adding richness to the area.

The silo-d building will host as a community centre as well as a commercial area with its cafes and outdoor stall markets.

Silo D will consist of being a community centre and by being placed adjacent to the dock play zone and the SiloD park, this heavily integrates with the surrounding community areas. The promenade aids the connectivity on a larger scale.

The architecture of silo-D already gives the district a distinct identity. Combination of historical boat infrastructures such as boat structure for kids playground can implement this historical idetity.

  • Distinct identity

  • Infrastructure

Silo-D will consist of the regeneration type of mostly facadism. This means the only rebuilding will consist of the inside, the outside appearance will stay the same but, there are some changes in the outside infrastructure (new windows and doors).

  • Sustainability

  • Relationship to water

The nearby dock frontage will act as a safe play water zone for children to play in as well as a seating area to have a sensorial experience and therefore relationship with the water thus adding richness to the area.

Objectives:

  • Mixed-use

  • Connecting the community

The community centre will act as a place for locals to seek local jobs, learn skills and be guided for further information. This contributes to an economically sustainable future for providing jobs and skills for with the local people.
