Silo-D is a grade 2 listed concrete building located on the Silvertown quays dock site. our vision aims to highlight its unique architectural structure.
-
Through high-quality design, our vision aims to improve the economic value of the area and the relationship of the local community with its regeneration incorporating physical and social benefits.
-
This design will achieve our vision statement which is " To revitalise the historic Royal Docks by delivering an innovative, sustainable and connected centre for communities and business to thrive".
Uses: Regeneration: Funding:
Silo D will become a community centre, cafe and work rental unit. Its existing structure makes it a unique suitable landmark and node for the local community to interact with each other. The surrounding water helps contribute to the potential relationship the community can have with the water. The surroundings will contain different economic activities such as food and drink from its pop up amrkets.
Silo D will be restored to aid the new uses that are appropriate to the vision.
The building has significant heritage importance within the area, and so it is key to preserve its structure in order to propose its character to the site. The proposal will use the overall approach of facadism, which consists of rebuilding the inside of the building while keeping the external structure. Although for our vision there will be the addition of windows and doors for community uses.
The National Lottery Fund can provide up to £50 million for restoration and conservation and so can secure the efficient delivery for Silo D. The community centre would be funded by the Community Land Trust as it is for the community through a combination of crowdfunding and grants. The commercial spaces could be funded by a combination of the National Lottery Heritage, foreign investment and Enterprise Zone rates.
